ALICE (AL is?) DOWN THE RABBIT HOLE?

     Another "transparent" moment or perhaps "imaginative twist" unfolding
at Eureka's August 12, 2013 Town Board meeting.

"Would you tell me, please, which way I ought to go from here?"  "That depends a great deal on where you want to get to."       Public comment from two Planning Commissioners addressed to the Town Board on August 12, 2013. (Refer to the Township CD of the
Al Novacek
8-12-2013, Town Board Meeting for the entire discussion of the issue.)     Listen to Commissioner Al Novacek's seemingly "transparent" moment;
and Commissioner Barfknecht's well-prepared recollection and response.

  1. The Facts:
    1. July 29, Commissioner Novacek goes to the home of Commissioner Barfknecht and suggests that her appointment to the Planning Commission was inappropriately conducted and that he felt she might be involved as well as the clerk and might want to consider resigning.
    2.August 5, Planning Commission sets a Public Hearing regarding Agri-tourism to be held on Sept. 3. Commissioner Hansen then suggested Commissioner Frana should
    recuse himself from the Public Hearing Agri-tourism issue.
    3. August 12, Commissioner Novacek comes before Board after sending them a letter stating his belief that Commissioner Barfknecht’s Planning Commission appointment was not valid and that perhaps the Board members should submit their previous votes to the attorney. Perhaps Commissioner Barfknecht should not be on the Commission. Commissioner Frana submits a document to the Town Board indicating
    reasons he was not recusing himself.
    5.Sept 3, Public Hearing was held. A motion was made by Commissioner Jennings that stated the proposed ordinance language suggested by three Town Board members NOT be passed in its current form. Commissioners Frana, Jennings and Barfknecht voted yes; Commissioner Novack voted no and Mr. Hansen abstained. Had Mr. Frana recused himself and had Ms. Barfknecht been removed from her position on the PC, it would have only taken two PC members to vote to
    recommend the proposed language to the Board. Three on the Board felt the language was appropriate as an Ordinance. JUST THINKING!

  2. Commissioner Novacek really should look up the definition of "slander." I am surprised that he apparently has no concern with his making such statements in a public forum. To me, this shows a profound lack of judgment from anybody, much less a Planning Commissioner who is supposed to be looking out for the Township's best interests. I find his behavior appalling. Commissioner Barfknecht, on the other hand, shows a clear-thinking person who isn't about to take any guff from the likes of Al! I am very proud of her!
